Blackjack Strategy

Blackjack

Most of us have seen the Hollywood movie, whereas the intellectually gifted College students allegedly created a team, and a clever scheme and took down the Casinos via Blackjack.  Fable or bio-history, the venture was as told very sophisticated and portrayed as easy, but more likely was more on the elaborate and carefully planned side of things.

As opposed to the exuberant strategic planning approach to bringing down the house and buy the casino with our winnings, let’s take a more conservative approach, that might get us modest steady winnings, and avoid peaks and overwhelming valleys.,

First of all, let’s assume most everyone knows the basics of Blackjack.  21 is a winner and anything over 21 is immediate departure of the player and his/her chips.  As we know, going over 21 is a BUST.

In theory Blackjack is presumed, or in better words, marketed as 50/50 chance of winning or losing.  If 50/50 is true, then why do most players lose?

Continuing the 50/50 thought, that if casinos assume the odds are even for the players and the house, then why on earth would they put so much investment into the casino and expect large Return on Investment? (ROI)

Well, unfortunately, we as players don’t always follow what we already know.

If we expect to win 50 out of 100 games (hands) and lose 50 out of 100 hands in each session, then we could assume that most likely we would often be at break even, (not win, not lose) and simply enjoy the playing as entertainment, right?

Wrong.  We simply do not program our brain and gambling session to work so methodically and in tandem.

Instead, most players make a plan to win a few hands, then systematically wager more chips (money) and seek the big win.  Agree that most do that?  Following that plan, then almost always the Casino wins!  How and why?

Since we have already concluded that we will win about 50 out of 100 hands, now we can conclude that if we win 3 small bets, then it could be probable that we can conclude that we might lose the next 3 high bets and even out the winnings and losing ratio, thus, results is Big Loss!

In the opposite, if the big losses were to come first, then the players pockets are already emptied, and players walk away in dismay.  More often than we would like, players lose in the beginning of the session, and find themselves trying to catch up with smaller wagers, and well, the results usually are not so perfect as planned.

Is the mundane plan of simply betting the same each hand and expecting to break even an option?  For most players, probably not.  So, how do put excitement and hopefully profit into our plan at the Blackjack table?

Know the Odds

Stated and presumed (marketed) at 50/50, but the nice thing of Blackjack is the player has some control,  that can give the player favor  1) Decide on the amount to wager  2) Decide on the number of cards he/she wants to sum up to a total as close to 21 as possible without going over total of 21.

There are 13 possible cards (draws)  Ace – 10, and Jack, Queen, King.  10, Jack, Queen and King are all equal to 10 in addition number.  Ace is 1 or 11. Thus, 4 of the 13 draws, are almost drawn 1/3 of the time.

A winning plan is have the player put himself/herself in strategy to anticipate receiving a 10 in a hit (getting a new card) or to put the dealer in position to take a 10 hit and go over 21 (BUST).  As a player, good to set goal of 20 and if totals 21, then even better but not the target.

All players cards are in “show”, so all players can easily see what cards have already been dealt.  If many small cards on the table, then probability of next card a 10 is high, if face cards (J,Q,K) or 10 are on the table, probability of next card being a 10 is low.

Generally, Dealers must hit at total 16 or below, and must stay at totals 17 or higher.  Players can hit or stay at their discretion.  Usually, players will not want to hit when total is 15 or over, but always check the cards on table and dealers showing card to make a smart decision to take another card (hit) or not (stay).

Adjust your Bets

Even though, the casino environment is fun and exciting, and you might develop some camaraderie with other players, be mindful of large amounts of small cards or large cards that have left the card deck.

Generally, players will want to bet larger sums when many small cards have been played, (probability is better player might enjoy the goal of 20 with 2 cards) and bet smaller sums when face cards and big cards have been played (probability of not so good total of low teens with 2 cards).

Overall, Blackjack is a fair game, and winning sessions do happen, but always remember, the Dealer has the same chance of pulling the 2-card 20 as the player does, and player sessions of pulling 2-card teen numbers generally, will not result in profit.
